Hi Paul,
To me ham radio is something that \i got into again as I reached retirement. I was a Tech in the 1960s and life got in the way of ham radio. I got back in about 3 years ago and with the benefit of a very good group (GARS), I am fully engaged with the hobby again.
Getting into a group is an idea that I can't recommend any stronger (or have an Elmer) to get started. The hobby has a lot of facets and having a group will give you an opportunity to explore all of them.
A lot of the current hams are getting long in the tooth, and it is good to see how the ham world is expanding into getting more involved with school programs, field days, help with the communication needs of communities -- like parades and races, etc.
